30 things I learned before turning 30

30.1So, I will be turning 30 in a few months and I have been thinking: What have I learned? What has life taught me so far?

Well… on one hand, I have learned so much! Every day is a new experience and lesson in life. However, I also have to consider the many times that I have failed or started over which just proves that my life is a constant work in progress. I have been very high and very low, but overall, I am very satisfied with what I know about life 🙂

I feel that I am at that point in life where I know who I am, what I want, who I want around and who I don’t. So here are the lessons that I have learned in the past 30 years:

  1. Life is about the journey, not about the destination. If you won’t enjoy the journey, don’t bother aiming for that goal.
  2. Spend money on experiences and people, not on things.
  3. The people you love come first… always!
  4. Cherish those who love you and support you – friends, family, partners, teachers, colleagues – and don’t be afraid to let go of those who don’t. With age, it becomes easier to say NO, to stop seeing people who aren’t worth our time and to spend more time with people who are worth it. Quality over quantity 🙂
  5. Be genuine and don’t lie, especially to yourself.
  6. You’re stuck with yourself, so you might as well invest a lot of time and efforts being the person that you want to be and love yourself.
  7. Love! Deeply, passionately, unconditionally. Love like it’s all that there is. Commit to it and give it your 100% because if you don’t want to do that you’re just wasting your time on a relationship.
  8. Trust yourself. You’re going to do just fine 🙂
  9. Do not let others define you, you know best who you are, what you want and where you’re going. Define yourself!
  10. Happiness comes from within. Nothing external can make you happy… not more than for a moment, and superficially, at least.
  11. Nothing is permanent… feelings, thoughts, pain, career… don’t make permanent decisions on things that are temporary.
  12. Everything that you live is part of the journey… it is all meant to make you a better, stronger, and kinder person. Use what you learn to improve and make the world a better place, for yourself and for others.
  13. Don’t let one failure define you. Don’t let one success define you.
  14. In order to receive, you must give first.
  15. Take care of yourself: body & mind.
  16. Health – physical and psychological – is our best asset. Invest in it while you still can. The younger you are, the bigger difference that you can make for the future.
  17. Be ready to risk at any point who you are for what you want to become… but only risk things that you are willing to lose.
  18. It’s OK to not know and to ask for help. If you don’t ask questions you will never know the answers.
  19. It’s all a matter of perspective. If you don’t like where you are and where you are going, you can try changing your perspective first, before you change your action.
  20. Knowledge is important, but WISDOM is better.
  21. Be kind and respectful, even when you don’t feel like it.
  22. Keep dreaming! As adults, we often lose our perception that everything is possible, that we can achieve anything and that “there is always a way”. We settle in our comfortable bubble in a 9 to 5 job and forget why we are all doing it in the first place. We have to keep working towards what we want in life.
  23. No matter what you do, strive to be a better person tomorrow that you are today.
  24. Always keep an open mind, you never know what kind of opportunity might come your way. Take some risks, try new things, experience more.
  25. Communication starts with being a good listener.
  26. The more you know, the more you realize that you don’t know.
  27. The days are long, but the years are short.” – a saying in medicine residency… it goes for life, too. Life goes by fast, so enjoy it while you can.
  28. Over the years, you realize that all the hard questions were in fact easy choices. As human beings, we have a tendency to “create happiness” which means that we will be equally happy no matter what our choices are. However, it’s all a matter of WHO we want to become, not whether we will be happy choosing that path or not.
  29. Breathe… it’s all going to be OK! And it will all make sense one day. Eventually…
  30. Never stop learning.
